Or
Route 2 west past Leominster and Gardner and after it turns into a two-lane road, look for the exit for Route 202 SOUTH (I think it’s exit 16, but it says Amherst on the sign). Take 202 south for about 14 miles until you come to a blinking yellow light. That’s Amherst Rd. (and it’s marked Amherst). Take that right, and follow it for about five miles into Amherst center. As you come into Amherst you’ll go through two sets of lights. Just before the third set of lights, take a left, and you’ll see Amherst common in front of you.
Or
Take the Mass Pike west to the Palmer exit (the sign will also say Amherst). After going through the toll booth, take a right and follow that road down to Route 20. Take a right (west) on 20 and go through Palmer until you come to a sign for Route 181 north (it will also say Amherst and UMass). Follow 181 through many turns through a series of towns (the turns are marked with signs for 181, but you have to keep your eyes open to see them), until it dumps you onto Route 202 in Belchertown. Follow Route 202 north—the direction you’re already going—out of Belchertown (and don’t forget to Belch as you go by!). About a mile later you will see a sign for Route 9 west, toward Amherst. Take that left and follow Route 9 for several miles until you enter Amherst. Go through two lights, then up the hill and over several speed bump/pedestrian crossings. Just before the third set of lights you will see Amherst common on your right.
Note: The time for these two routes is about the same, but the Route 2 variation is a little easier to follow, vastly prettier, and there are no tolls.
