Photo Guidelines for Cultural Survival Publications

We can work with photographs in any format—prints, slides, color negatives, digital files—though digital images are the most convenient. Digital images should be shot and sent in the highest resolution possible—300 dpi at a size of 5 x 7 inches or larger is our preference for a file size (there is no upper limit on resolution). We can accept RAW files, JPEGS, TIFFs, and other file types. If you are using a more exotic file type, please contact the art director, Jamie Brown, at (617) 441-5400 x17 or jamie@cs.org. At the moment, we do not have an FTP drop site set up, so we recommend that digital files be sent by email or through sites such as YouSendIt.com or Pando.com, which can handle very large files of a gigabyte or more. We print in color, but black and white images of exceptional quality are also considered. All photographs used in the magazine may be cropped to suit a layout and also may be adjusted for color or subjected to other corrective editing to address technical flaws.

Because we try to use as much of our money as possible to support indigenous peoples, our operating budget is very slender, and at this time we cannot offer payment for the use of photographs, but we do offer copies of the magazine to our contributors, and for those contributors who live in countries where their charitable donations are tax deductible, we offer letters acknowledging the donation. We can also offer some guidance on current market rates for assessing the value of the donation, which can be worth a significant amount of money in tax reduction.
